Mealtime Devotions

4 stars - great book for your family time
This title caught my eye.  I was intrigued with the idea of Mealtime Devotions.  Looking for more verbal interaction in our modern day has put this book at the top of my list.  We all know how important eating together is – in fact I think a lot of us do eat together, it’s just the quality of conversation I usually wonder about.

This great little book has a lot of clever and fun ways to open up easy conversations that get the family talking.  My teenagers roll their eyes yet they don’t leave and my younger kids eat it up.   I really like the books structure.  Each page has a clever topic, no long paragraphs  just bulleted information and simple questions.  Each topic comes from a scripture or scripture story.
This  concise book easily fits in a purse or even in your glove box.  I leave it sitting on my chair at the table, always there and ready. Who could ask for a better way to increase the quality of conversation with your family?

I received this book free from the publisher Tyndale Blog Network book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

ORGANIZE the BEST parts of your LIFE!

To Start the Month out right...
I decided to ORGANIZE some of THE BEST things we do as a Family - and thus increase our chances for Success!!

This chart combines:
  1. FHE - assignments for the month
  2. Book of Mormon - reading each day and crossing it off
  3. Conference Ensign Study - using Sunday to read a little from the Conference Ensign - or have it read to you (I then will furnish a small insentive/treat) (this can also be a prep. for FHE time too)
  4. Scripture Memorizing - Plan ahead on which scriptures you want to memorize as a family (start with one, resite it once a day -dinner, family prayer, before school, etc)
Half the time it's all in organization !:)
Here is our chart you are welcome to download and print - I will continue posting one for each month a couple days before the new month arrives!:)

Organize your Scripture Reading and FHE

Can the Job Charts - Use the Job Can!

I have found that each day my home has different needs.  The job chart will tell someone to clean the microwave which is spotless, while the kitchen floor screams for help!  THUS I have conquered this problem by canning the afterschool job chart and making a Job Can!  Before the kids come home I look around my house and say to myself, "What do I need done?"  then I put those jobs in the can of jobs to pick from!  The second can is where there completed job goes and all possible jobs wait.  It works great for me - I simply write what jobs I need done on the popcycle stick and the kids pick one of  the sticks in the can and I find I get the help I need!

Job Cans are simple to make!
  • 2 mandarin orange Cans for my job cans
  • Popcycle Sticks
  • 4 pieces of coordinating scrapbook paper
  • Glue Gun
  • Glue Dots
  • Paint
Start by covering your can with paper - use the label as your pattern.
Watch the Tutorial HERE on making paper flowers (EASY) and quickly cut up 3!
Lay out your paint sticks on wax paper and paint the ends.
Once dry you can write jobs your kids can do on the bottom half of the popcycle stick with a sharpie.

Store all the jobs in the "DONE" can and each day add the jobs you want done to the "TODO" can!  :)    This can be a great way to "can" the old job chart and start fresh with something new!

Bathroom Cleaning Charts

Place a Bathroom Cleaning Chart on each Bathroom Door.  This makes it easy for the kids to know what they are to do each day!  Put the chart in a sheet protector and then tape it to the door!

Tips for Helping your Kids clean their own Bathrooms:

1- Keep a bucket of cleaning supplies in each bathroom
2 - Label each cleaner with what it cleans (windex - windows, comet - toilet & tub, spray lysol - counter & floor)
3 - Keep a second bucket with paper towels and cleaning rags stocked for them to use
4 - Clean with children 5 and under,
5- For children 5 and older demonstrate how to clean and then watch them the first few times
6 - I like to always say "You can play after your bedroom and bathroom job is done"  motivation makes cleaning happen:)

After Dinner Job Chart

WHEN WE'RE HELPING WE'RE HAPPY!
Be sure everyone knows what to do after dinner - Clean UP!  Laminate this chart and post it to your fridge or a kitchen cupboard.  Now every night your home will clean itself as everyone does their job!

BIRTHDAY TIME!

Try this fun way to "decorate" for your children's birthdays this year!
You simply need  2-3 yards of poster paper at a local copy or craft store & then cut out their age as large as you can!  Tape it to the garage(w/masking tape) and then from the scraps cut out more and tape them on the front door & inside the house on walls/doors &windows.  It's a fun - cheap & easy way to add some special pizaz!

Just Me and my Mom

After hearing lots of great talks this weekend at church on how important a mother's influence is, I am motivated to start integrating some better habits into my life.  First I pulled out this list.  My idea is to make sure each week I do a fun one-on-one time with each of my 5 kids.  I plan to use the list as a springboard to decide on a short activity we can do together - even if the other kids are home.

With life being so full I find the one-on-one time easily drains to the bottom.  So I'm plugging up the leaks and scheduling in time.  Wed. &Thursdays are my days to have "Just Me and my Mom" times.  The point?  To have fun, learn more about my kids, and tighten the knot between us!
